Spices vs. Seasoning

Spices and seasonings are often used interchangeably. However, spices and seasonings are entirely different from each other. Spices come from tropical plants in various forms like dried seeds. It has a pungent or aromatic quality that’s used for flavoring. Seasonings, on the other hand, are a blend of different flavoring components like spices, sugar, and salt. As such, spices and seasonings can’t be used interchangeably. One must know how and where a spice or seasoning can be correctly used. A correct spice or a correct seasoning can add a great flavor and taste to a bland dish as well.To know more about it

SPICES

Some spices are mainly sourced from seeds, dried fruits or berries, but they can be sourced from the roots or barks of certain trees and plants as well. This is where their flavor comes from, and they contain essential oils. The oils are extracted through different processes like pounding, grinding, cooking and grating. Spices offer gastronomic delight and variety for everyone in the family. For instance, turmeric can help fight inflammation. It contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric can help improve digestion, address autoimmune problems with inflammatory side effects and heal leaky gut. Curcumin can also help improve the body’s antioxidant capacity.

Spices generally refer to any seasoning made from the other parts of the plant besides the leaves, including the roots, stems, bark, seeds, fruit or buds. Spices last a long time but lose their flavor eventually. The ground version of spices loses flavor faster than the whole version. Store the spices in a tightly closed glass container and keep them in a cool, dark place. To preserve its freshness, keep the container away from any source of heat.  A glass container is the best choice as many plastic containers contain BPA. Don’t purchase a spice rack that spices in it because chances are. They’re no longer fresh. Check the expiration date before buying any spices.

SEASONING

Seasonings are a mix of food flavoring additives like sugar, juices, salt, and sauces. Seasoning blends may be dry or wet. Dry blends contain only herbs and spices mixed together. Among the simplest and most common of dry blends are garlic salt and onion salt mixtures.Wet blends include some sort of liquid, often a kind of vinegar or oil, or both. Ketchup and mustard are two of the most prevalent wet seasonings. Others include Tabasco sauce, soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Using seasonings offers a lot of benefits such as improving the flavor of foods. Using seasonings can help stretch your budget as well.  Cheap staple ingredients can become delicious dishes. Seasonings are necessary for special diets like low fat and low salt diets. Instant foods are popular right now due to our busy lifestyles. However, seasonings can significantly improve the nutritional value and taste of our foods.

Receiving compliments for your culinary creations can boost your confidence as well. When used skillfully, your seasonings can become the main point of your dishes.
